In a shocking revelation, Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old man who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump during a rally, had been preparing for the attack at a well-known Pennsylvania gun range regularly used by federal agents. The Clairton Sportsmen’s Club in Jefferson Hills, where Crooks honed his marksmanship, has become a focal point in the ongoing investigation into the attempted assassination that left Trump wounded and claimed the life of an innocent bystander.
According to records obtained by Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Crooks was no stranger to the gun range, having visited the facility multiple times in the months leading up to the July 13 attack. Crooks joined the club in August 2023 and logged 43 visits in less than a year, with the majority of his time spent practicing on the 200-yard-long rifle range. The distance closely mirrored the 150-yard shot Crooks took at Trump during the rally, an eerie indication of the methodical preparation behind his actions.

Grassley’s office described Crooks’ routine visits to the range as part of “intense preparation” for the assassination attempt. The records reveal that Crooks was a regular at the club, visiting between three and six times per month, often choosing holidays like Christmas Day, Valentine’s Day, and Halloween to practice his shooting skills. His final visit to the range occurred on July 12, just a day before he carried out the attack at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
