This week, a high-level Ukrainian delegation traveled to Washington with a bold request for the Biden administration: lift the ban on using U.S. missiles to strike inside Russian territory. The request comes amid escalating tensions and could significantly heighten the risk of a broader conflict, potentially even a nuclear war.
Led by five members of the Ukrainian parliament, the delegation’s plea centers on the strategic need to counter Russian military advances effectively. With Russia intensifying its offensive in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, Kyiv’s representatives argue that the ability to strike back using American-supplied weaponry is crucial. As reported by The Hill, the ban currently restricts Ukraine from deploying U.S.-manufactured systems like the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) against targets within Russia, significantly limiting their defensive strategy.

David Arahamiya, a leading Ukrainian MP in the delegation, emphasized the urgency of their request, likening the situation to an imaginary scenario where Washington, D.C. is attacked from Virginia, yet a counterstrike on Virginia is prohibited. “It’s crazy,” Arahamiya explained. “Military people, like generals, they don’t understand. So they are pushing us as politicians, like stop [the policy] this is insane.”
