In a landmark decision that could significantly impact the 2024 elections, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled 6-3 in favor of using a Louisiana congressional map that includes a second predominantly black district. The ruling was made amid a series of legal challenges and disputes over the state’s redistricting efforts.
Historically dominated by Republicans, Louisiana has been at the center of controversy since a 2022 district judge’s ruling. The judge declared that a map drawn by the Republican-led state legislature violated the 1965 Voting Rights Act by failing to adequately represent the state’s black population, which constitutes about one-third of its residents.

The state legislature responded by adopting a new map in January that created an additional black-majority district. However, this new map was quickly challenged by a group of voters who alleged it was racially biased. This led to a federal three-judge panel labeling the map unconstitutional, stating it prioritized racial demographics over traditional redistricting principles.
