Newsom Spares Panera from Wage Hike Due to CEO’s Donations!

Due to political campaign contributions from billionaire CEO Greg Flynn, Panera Bread was exempted from the state’s new $20 minimum wage ordinance by California Governor Gavin Newsom (D).

California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) signed a bill in September raising the minimum wage for fast-food employees to $20 per hour.

“Eighty percent of the workforce, these fast food places – 80 percent of people of color, two thirds…are women, the majority are breadwinners and we have the opportunity to reward that contribution, reward that sacrifice and stabilize an industry in turn. What a remarkable moment,” During the bill signing in September, Newsom stated.

According to Bloomberg, Newsom pushed for Panera Bread’s exception from the minimum wage regulations. Flynn, a rich restaurant entrepreneur and benefactor to Newsom, was connected to the California governor on a commercial level.

Regarding the exception, Newsom informed reporters that it is “part of the sausage-making” process in politics.
