Liberal Mayor Axes City Services, Shifts Funds to Support Illegal Immigrants

Denver, Colorado, Mayor Mike Johnston declared on Friday that due to a “critical situation with the budget,” the city will be reducing services.

As a politician, Johnston naturally refused to accept accountability for the cuts, and as a leftist (he was called “a homegrown Bernie Sanders” by one outlet in 2017), he was also unable to place the blame for the “critical situation” on the surge of undocumented immigrants in his city, even though that appears to be what’s caused it.

Johnston, a Democrat, declined to blame President Joe Biden’s failed border policy and his administration for the issue in 2024.

Johnston blamed congressional Republicans for the cuts at the outset of his news conference on Friday.

“I’m here to talk a little bit about the devastating impact of the failure of Republican leadership in Congress this week to pass comprehensive immigration change and the impact that will have both on city budgets and on services that we can provide for newcomers in the city,” Johnston stated, immediately upon entering.

It wasn’t until much later in his speech that Johnston voiced his dissatisfaction that the Senate, which is controlled by Democrats, was unable to enact a border accord this week.

“We would have a balanced flow of people that would come with work authorization,” If only Congress had enacted a measure, Johnston said. “That would come with federal resources, and cities like ours could successfully integrate them.”

Naturally, one of the issues with that approach is that it starts with the premise that the American people want Congress to figure out how to “successfully integrate” the millions of illegal immigrants who are now living in the nation.

The majority of Americans do, in fact, oppose Congress giving the lawful integration of the millions of unauthorized immigrants now residing in the nation first priority. While there could be exceptions for those who qualify for asylum or refugee status because of circumstances in their native countries, most Americans support legal immigration and think that illegal immigrants should be deported as a result of their conduct.

Johnston makes the suggestion—or at least wants the public to think—that Republicans are influencing immigration laws in order to win more seats in November. His admission that Republicans may profit from the immigration problem shows how much of the blame he lays on the other party.

Johnston didn’t answer why Democrats, who controlled both chambers of Congress and the White House during the first two years of the Biden administration, failed to address the problem if that was their true intention.

According to KCNC, Johnston announced changes to the Department of Motor Vehicles and Parks and Recreation, saying that, at least for the time being, no layoffs were anticipated.

“Without any federal support, without any work authorization, without changes to policy, we are going to have to make changes to what we can do in terms of our city budget, and what we can do in terms of support for newcomers who have arrived in the city,” he said.

For example, the majority of motor vehicle registration will be done online, which is certainly a plus rather than a bug for anyone who has ever stood in line at the DMV.

According to KCNC, the city wants to shave off almost $5 million from its budget.
