Iran had earlier threatened to retaliate against Joe Biden for any response to the American service members’ deaths at the hands of a drone.
According to CENTCOM, over 125 precise munitions were used in the airstrikes, and over 85 locations were targeted by US military forces.
Full statement:
4:00 p.m. (EST) February 02, U.S. The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force in Iran and associated militia groups were the targets of airstrikes carried out by Central Command (CENTCOM) forces in Syria and Iraq. Over 85 targets were hit by US military forces, using a variety of aircraft, including long-range bombers that were operated out of the US. Over 125 precise weapons were used in the airstrikes. The targets of the strikes were logistics and munitions supply chain facilities of militia groups and their IRGC sponsors, who enabled attacks against U.S. and Coalition forces. The facilities included intelligence and command centers, missiles, rockets, and storages for unmanned aerial vehicles.
Biden gives Iran enough time to prepare for a counterattack, as more than 160 strikes target US military installations in Jordan, Syria, and Iraq. ‘Multi-tiered response’ is what you should expect.
34 US service members were hurt, including 8 who needed to be taken to another location for medical attention, leaving three US service members dead. When the troops were attacked by an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) late on Saturday night, they were apparently sleeping in a tent structure.
The seventeenth Engineer Company, a reservist unit based in Fort Moore, Georgia, was the unit that produced the three service members who were killed in action.
Three service members’ names were made public by the Pentagon:
- Sgt. William Jerome Rivers, 46 of Carrollton, GA
- Spc. Kennedy Ladon Sanders, 24, of Waycross, GA
- Spc. Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, 23, Savannah, GA
