Variety magazine reported in late 2024 that Pixar intended to reduce its workforce. The choice was made in response to the poor box office receipts of films like Lightyear and Elemental, which drew flak for using socialist themes. The precise number of layoffs is still unknown.
It was TechCrunch that first revealed the upcoming layoffs at Pixar. In line with their report, the studio is considering firing twenty percent of its employees, or fewer than a thousand people. Variety has been informed by a Pixar representative that Disney, the parent company, is not considering making as many cuts as some had suggested.
