A touchscreen ballot marking device (BMD) in Georgia was made available to the Curling Plaintiffs by the Court in September 2020 so they could evaluate its security. After carefully testing the system, Drew and I found flaws in nearly every section that an attacker might exploit. The vulnerability that we found most worrisome allows for arbitrary code execution, which can be used to distribute malware from the county’s central election management system (EMS) to every BMD under its authority. This implies that physical access to any BMD is not necessary for a large-scale assault on them.

Wonderful news! The office recently revealed that they would be testing the much awaited Democracy Suite 5.17, which was just approved by the Election Assistance Commission, in 2023. There has never been an election anyplace before that has employed this revolutionary program.

Pilots will extensively evaluate the new software’s functionality in an actual setting. Furthermore, the procedures will be examined and updated, necessitating the testing and modification of more than 45,000 voting devices. It will require a large number of workers and time to complete. The statewide transition to version 5.17 will thus take place following the 2024 election cycle. The state and counties are now able to give the presidential cycle and local elections top priority. It also provides the state with the chance to properly prepare for and carry out the most recent software upgrade.

Georgia’s Electronic Voting Machines Are Sued Going to Trial
A trial in January has been scheduled by a U.S. District Judge to determine the destiny of Georgia’s contentious computerized voting equipment. The complaint raises worries about possible hacking and casts doubt on the security and susceptibility of the state’s present system. The state’s use of these devices must now be justified, according to Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, before the next presidential primary election. Watch this space for updates on this important matter.

To prevent Raffensperger from testifying, the state is currently appealing to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals using public funds.

Speaking to James Magazine Online, a lawyer with knowledge of the matter says: “Raffensperger selected the system, repeatedly defends the system as secure, but now can’t take an hour or so in federal court to defend it.”

The fate of Raffensperger’s evidence is uncertain when the 11th Circuit Court meets on Friday.
