Journalist Slams Johnson; Gaetz Says ‘Cry More’!

Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) backed House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) when he came under criticism for not making money off of his tenure in Congress.

A reporter for the Daily Beast was chastised by the Florida Republican for conceitedly mentioning that Speaker Johnson had a small mortgage and “doesn’t have any retirement savings, own a single stock, or have any assets at all. He has less than $5,000 in his bank account.” The Beast’s Matt Fuller, a journalist in Washington, D.C., sent a link to an article examining Johnson’s revelations and characterizing his financial situation as “extraordinarily precarious.”

“The Daily Beast is furious that @SpeakerJohnson isn’t rich, corrupt or rich from being corrupt,” wrote Gaetz on X. “He doesn’t have shady business deals. He doesn’t trade stocks as a congressman.

He said, adding an emoji of a shrug, “Cry more, I guess?”

Regardless of their party, members of Congress frequently see increases in income. They manage to see an increase in their net worth even though they are required to reveal every dollar they get. Ethics regulations require people like Speaker Johnson to disclose their income, taxes paid, and stock purchases and sales. Some members have experienced difficulties in the past due to this specific requirement, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi, who is well-known for her extensive stock trading, has gained attention for enacting laws that directly affected businesses in which she had shares.

The top Republican in Congress is being targeted by the liberal media site The Beast for allegedly having no personal gain, which is a first. They are implying that Speaker Johnson may have hidden agendas in order to leave government and pursue a lucrative lobbying career. Experts questioned by the site expressed worries over possible “influence buying.”

Prepare for a political confrontation as Democrats use Speaker Johnson’s victory to boost their campaign contributions. They’re cautioning that in light of the recent Roe v. Wade ruling, he could attempt to reverse LGBT rights and limit access to abortion. Republicans in swing districts, meanwhile, are preparing for challenging reelection campaigns in 2019. But Speaker Johnson has already demonstrated his ability to raise money, which will help the party in the coming months.
