Tom Emmer, the GOP’s nominee for speaker, withdraws from the contest after briefly being the conference’s favorite and receiving a harsh criticism from his party’s leader.
Emmer is harshly criticized by Donald Trump, who calls him a “Globalist RINO,” and it appears to have had a considerable effect. Emmer missed taking the gavel by 26 votes in a vote that was conducted behind closed doors. There was a four-vote margin of error.
Tuesday at noon, Trump launched a vicious attack on Truth Social. ” I have many wonderful friends wanting to be Speaker of the House, and some are truly great Warriors. RINO Tom Emmer, who I do not know well, is not one of them.”
The subsequent events served as a comprehensive attack against Emmer from the standpoint of America First.
Trump went on,
“He never respected the Power of a Trump Endorsement, or the breadth and scope of MAGA—MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! “
The former president continued by leveling a serious accusation on Emmer: “He fought me all the way, and actually spent more time defending Ilhan Omar, than he did me—He is totally out-of-touch with Republican Voters.”
He did, however, leave Emmer with a glimmer of hope when he said, “I believe he has now learned his lesson, because he is saying that he is Pro-Trump all the way, but who can ever be sure? Has he only changed because that’s what it takes to win?”
Trump’s concluding words sent a strong and unsettling message to House Republicans, seriously endangering Emmer’s hopes of becoming speaker.
“The Republican Party cannot take that chance, because that’s not where the America First Voters are. Voting for a Globalist RINO like Tom Emmer would be a tragic mistake!”

After Trump’s warning, Jake Sherman of Punchbowl News observed via X that “There is all of the sudden a lot of Mike-Johnson-will-be-speaker buzz,” referring to the Congressman from Louisiana, who some have referred to as a “dark horse” candidate who might unite the America First and establishment wings of the GOP.
Sherman said that the criticism of Emmer’s potential speakership was not only uploaded on Truth Social but also reportedly texted to House Republicans. As he wrote, “TRUMP’s operation has texted House Republicans the truth social post dumping on Emmer.”
CNN reports that Trump subsequently talked with reporters outside the New York courtroom where he is now on trial. He told the media, “It looks like he’s finished. Looks like he’s finished.”
“He was a RINO. And it looks like he’s finished but we’ll see. You never know.”
Congressman Mario Diaz Balart (R-FL) emphasized Emmer’s major position in the House in order to draw attention to the conference’s severe divides.
“If Tom Emmer can’t do it, then that’s when it gets a little scary because remember, he’s the whip,” Balart said. “He knows how to count votes. He has the relationships with every member of the conference.”
