The battle for the Republican House Speakership has taken an unexpected turn as a result of former President Donald Trump’s views on Congressman Steve Scalise’s (R-LA) health. Find out whether this may affect Scalise’s bid for office.
Trump explained, “I like Steve, I like both of them very much, but the problem, you know, Steve is a man that is in serious trouble, from the standpoint of his cancer.”
Up until recently, Scalise was set to become the next Speaker of the House, especially after a GOP caucus meeting that seemed to increase his advantage over his rival, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH).
On Thursday, the momentum changes as daybreak approaches. Scalise’s future is in jeopardy as more than ten Republican legislators declare they would not back him. According to reports, Scalise could resign.
Scalise’s health and the possible costs of holding such a high office while suffering from a serious health condition were major themes in Trump’s speech. “This is tremendous stress, all of the things that you hear about, and you know, things that you don’t want to get involved in from the standpoint of getting well. He was going through very, very serious cancer therapy,” Trump remarked.
The former President shared his worry, noting that Scalise should put his attention primarily on his recuperation. “He’s got a very serious form of cancer, and you know, most importantly, I want Steve to get well. I just don’t know how you can do the job when you have such a serious problem.”
Trump was eager to highlight his overall support for the GOP’s selection for the position even if Scalise’s route appears to be fraught with obstacles, saying, “I’m going to be with anybody they pick… But I mean, the one thing with Steve, he’s got to get well. He’s got to get strong.”
In light of Scalise’s anticipated withdrawal, speculation grows as Rep. Jordan contemplates reentering the race. If that takes place, Jordan could have a clean route with little opposition.
