Congressman Matt Gaetz and Rep. Nancy Mace joined forces with former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon in a heated discussion on Steve Bannon’s War Room to discuss their shared objective of toppling former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Gaetz’s attempt to highlight their contrasts, on the other hand, may not have had the desired effect. Bannon, famed for his keen wit and impeccable memory, brought up a key vote made by Mace in 2021.
McCarthy’s departure was engineered by hardline Republicans, according to Gaetz and Mace. Bannon challenged Gaetz about Mace’s vote in favor of his four-month prison term without missing a beat.
Gaetz has previously branded Mace as “not a hard-right intransigent lawmaker,” noting that their “Venn diagram overlaps around spending.”
Mace claimed, “I like the Constitution. I’m a constitutionalist. Okay?”
Bannon responded with a devastating verbal retort, “My appellate lawyer would disagree about that.”
According to Newsweek, Mace was one of nine Republicans who voted to hold Bannon in contempt of Congress two years ago, in October 2021. This was due to Bannon’s refusal to comply with a subpoena issued by the House “Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol.” The committee was constituted in contravention of House rules, as it excluded Republican House leadership from decision-making and nominations.
Bannon refused to comply with a subpoena, resulting in a guilty judgement for contempt. He is now facing a four-month prison sentence beginning in October 2022. His case, however, is currently being appealed.
Mace responded to her own criticism of Gaetz in January in a Wednesday post to X, formerly Twitter. “RepMattGaetz full ego was on display today. He’s going to screw around and get another Pelosi elected Speaker. I’ll have a lot more to say about this political D-Lister tomorrow.”
She self-corrected saying, “Unlike others in DC, I actually make up my mind with new facts and information. In hindsight,@mattgaetz was right in January. And we cannot make that mistake again. We cannot elect another Pelosi as Speaker.”

Bannon reposted a Politico piece about Gettr, noting “South Carolina RINOs Attack Nancy Mace for Her Vote to End McCarthy’s Failed Speakership” Mace shared this to X, noting “I graduated from The Citadel and know how to fight back.”
Recent posts indicate a possible reunion between Bannon and Mace. However, the outcome of Bannon’s planned appeal will have a significant impact on their relationship.
As of Thursday afternoon, neither Bannon, Mace, nor Gaetz had publicly commented on the tense interaction between Bannon and Mace.
In a statement addressed to X, Mace clarifies her decision to remove McCarthy as Speaker. She speaks directly to her followers, explaining her vote.
“This isn’t a left-right issue. This isn’t an ideological debate. It comes down to trust and honoring your word. This is all about getting Congress to perform its job. I promised the Lowcountry that I would be a strong voice in Congress. That regardless of party, I would call the balls and strikes and do the right thing. The Speaker has not kept his word on how the House will run.
There is no budget and no separate spending bills. Using a CR concentrates spending power in the hands of a select few, giving the masses no control. It’s time to make a shift.
Promised steps on problems we care about have not materialized.
Promises of improvement on women’s problems and laws to improve community safety remained unfulfilled.
She added, “I’ll work with anyone willing to do that and look forward to voting for a Speaker who shares this vision for changing Congress and getting us back on a path to delivering results for the people.”
