Because of Governor Greg Abbott’s bussing policy, nearly 15,000 migrants have rushed to Chicago. This influx of arrivals has put a burden on shelters, prompting the city to turn police stations and other buildings into makeshift migrant camps. Unfortunately, the surge has resulted in an increase in criminality within and near the refuge locations.
On the weekend of September 23, a brawl broke out in a Chicago migrant shelter. According to reports, this was not the first time. Alderman Ray Lopez began calling on elected leaders in early September to eliminate some of the sanctuary city’s protections due to an uptick in drug- and gang-related activity in and near the shelters.
According to a recent Chicago Sun-Times investigation, Alderman Lopez has proposed allowing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to capture migrants engaging in criminal activity. Lopez particularly proposes that ICE should have the ability to take action if an immigrant is detained for gang-related charges, drug offenses, prostitution, or sex crimes involving children. Individuals convicted of certain offences may also be targeted by federal agents. While the motion has yet to be passed, Lopez’s plan seeks to address public safety issues while also improving immigration enforcement.
In August, Alderman Brian Hopkins expressed concern about an increase in drug-related occurrences, violence, prostitution, and other illegal activity. He also mentioned that there has been an increase in shoplifting occurrences in the nearby stores. The alderman underlined the importance of increasing federal support.
Brandon Vulpitta, owner of a well-known karaoke club near the scene of the recent brawl, speaks strongly to the reporters. He criticizes officials for their negligence and draws attention to the worrisome lack of attention paid to the shelter’s security. Vulpitta underlines that the safety of their customers is now in jeopardy.

Hundreds of people in Alderman Brendan Reilly’s area have expressed their dissatisfaction over migrant fights and filthy sidewalks. While sympathetic to the situation of the migrants, Reilly urges Mayor Brandon Johnson to address these severe concerns as soon as possible.
