A proclamation declaring July to be “American Christian Heritage Month” was revoked by county officials in California after a number of left-wing organizations argued that doing so was against the U.S. Constitution.
The proclamation was withdrawn by the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday with a unanimous 5-0 vote, much to the delight of its detractors who feared legal action.
“The purpose of the proclamation was to recognize some of our religious heritage,” According to KXTV-TV, supervisor John Hidahl gave an explanation. “But unfortunately, with a lot of good intents, there’s unintended consequences that sometimes happen.”
The declaration, which was adopted in July on a 4-1 vote, was immediately opposed by liberal activists who thought it violated the principle of the separation of church and state and sparked a heated discussion over America’s Christian past.
“This proclamation is a clear breach of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution,” According to The Sacramento Bee, Chris Line, an attorney for the Freedom from Religion Foundation, wrote to the board.
“By issuing this proclamation advancing Christian nationalism and the debunked myth that we are a Christian nation, El Dorado County is ironically violating the country’s true heritage of religious liberty based on a secular government.”
The American Civil Liberties Union also provided their viewpoint.
“We are concerned that the Resolution conveys that the County supports, promotes and endorses specific religious beliefs and, as such, violates the California Constitution,” In a letter to itself, the ACLU wrote.
“Our state Constitution protects the rights of individuals to practice and promote their religion as they see fit and, at the same time, prevents the government from promoting a specific religion or religion in general.”
According to The Times of Israel, Marla Saunders, who had begun a petition against the declaration, said she was “teary with joy” over the decision to revoke it.
