Menendez’s Defiant Stance: ‘I’m Not Leaving!

Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) is indicted for allegedly taking part in a massive bribery scheme involving a foreign government, but he refuses to resign in the face of calls from other Democrats.

Sen. from New Jersey and his wife are accused of a bribery conspiracy
Sen. Menendez and his wife have been accused of participating in a shady bribery deal by the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. The couple, three businessmen from New Jersey, and the Egyptian government are said to have benefitted from this plan. The senator is charged with accepting pricey gifts, including a $60,000 Mercedes Benz, gold bars, and cash, in return for giving Egyptian officials access to confidential US government information. The prosecution asserts that the couple accepted a large number of additional presents.

In light of the charge, many Democrats are calling for Menendez to resign, including Phil Murphy, the governor of New Jersey. “Under our legal system, Senator Menendez and the other defendants have not been found guilty and will have the ability to present evidence disputing these charges, and we must respect the process,” Murphy said in a statement. “However, the alleged facts are so serious that they compromise the ability of Senator Menendez to effectively represent the people of our state. Therefore, I am calling for his immediate resignation.”

Menendez’s unwillingness to quit in the face of mounting pressure is creating a commotion. Menendez has voluntarily stepped down as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee while the matter is being handled, according to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

“Those who believe in justice believe in innocence until proven guilty,” Menendez said. “I intend to continue to fight for the people of New Jersey with the same success I’ve had for the past five decades. This is the same record of success these very same leaders have lauded all along. It is not lost on me how quickly some are rushing to judge a Latino and push him out of his seat.”

Menendez nearly avoided a federal indictment in 2017 when a mistrial resulted from the jury’s inability to reach a verdict on the counts of bribery and corruption. Additionally, Chris Christie, the former attorney general of New Jersey, launched a corruption probe into him back in 2006.
