In a forested region close to Philadelphia, tactical police teams conducted a risky operation to capture a killer who had escaped from jail. The fact that the escapee scaled the prison walls while being an illegal immigrant increased the shock value of the circumstance.
Danelo Cavalcante was apprehended by Pennsylvania State Police after 13 days on the run. Only 30 miles from Philadelphia, in South Coventry Township, a stunning arrest occurred. Cavalcante was carried from his hiding place in the woods in handcuffs, appearing untidy with a torn Philadelphia Eagles sweatshirt and messy hair.

Cavalcante was convicted of first-degree murder for the brutal stabbing death of his 33-year-old lover, Deborah Brando, in a shocking act of violence. Unbelievably, this vicious assault took place in front of Brando’s young children, who are 4 and 7. Cavalcante has been given a life sentence in jail without the possibility of release. When caught for major or violent offenses, illegal immigrants like Cavalcante might be deported. In most cases, ICE requests an immigration detainer to start the deportation procedure. However, ICE’s ability to efficiently execute detainers has been severely hampered by the large number of outstanding orders. ICE issued a stunning 78,829 detainers for noncitizens with criminal histories in only the fiscal year 2022. According to the New York Times, there were 1,751 for crimes involving death, 1,911 for kidnappings, 2,934 for robberies, 8,450 for sex crimes, and a startling 26,186 for assaults.
