Secret Service agent Paul Landis casts doubt on the official version of President John F. Kennedy’s death and offers a new interpretation of the terrible incident.
The 88-year-old Landis is telling his tale without any ulterior motives. He merely wants people in America to make their own judgments. The widely accepted “magic bullet theory” put out by the Warren Commission following their inquiry into the assassination is expected to be contested in this former Secret Service agent’s upcoming biography.
A single bullet that struck President Kennedy from behind, went through his throat, and then struck Texas Governor John Connally many times, wounding his chest, back, wrist, and leg, according to the Warren Commission’s findings. This amazing trajectory gave rise to the moniker “magic bullet.”
The origin of the bullet found in a stretcher at Parkland Memorial Hospital that was thought to have been holding Connally is in question. Landis, a crucial witness, has a different version of events but was not questioned by the Warren Commission.
Instead of the hospital, Landis discovers the “magic bullet” in the presidential limousine. He chooses to strap it to the stretcher without completely knowing why, believing it would help with Kennedy’s medical care. The bullet eventually transfers from one stretcher to the other when the two stretchers eventually clash.
“There was nobody there to secure the scene, and that was a big, big bother to me,” The New York Times was told by Landis. “All the agents that were there were focused on the president.”
“This was all going on so quickly. And I was just afraid that — it was a piece of evidence, that I realized right away. Very important. And I didn’t want it to disappear or get lost,” Landis said. “So it was, ‘Paul, you’ve got to make a decision,’ and I grabbed it.’”
Landis claims that although Kennedy was struck by the gunshot, it did not completely penetrate for whatever reason.
The former Secret Service agent has refrained from commenting on any wider ramifications of his story. Though he has begun to doubt it, he has always thought Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone shooter. “At this point, I’m beginning to doubt myself,” he said. “Now I begin to wonder.”
