New York City supports government payments to the children of slaves, joining the drive for reparations. The city’s health administration claims that by offering financial assistance, the problems that have remained since liberation 158 years ago will be rectified. This project has the support of Mayor Eric Adams (D).
The NYC Department of Health released a new study on July 18 titled “Analyzing the Racial Wealth Gap and Implications for Health Equity.” The New York Post first made the research public. Despite the fact that no one living in the US today was a slave or the owner of one, the study, which is supported by Mayor Adams’ administration, asks for a federal reparations program to “seek acknowledgment, redress, and closure” for the injustice of slavery. Despite the fact that slavery was ended in New York in 1865, the study also calls for recompense for “Jim Crow, and ongoing systemic racism” in an effort to make reparations relevant to the 21st century.
Black Mayor Adams requested compensation from businesses last year if “the foundation of their wealth came from slavery,” saying that this was “long overdue.” The contentious concept, according to Adams and other proponents like the new NYC research, would close the income gap between black and white Americans and lessen health disparities.
The Left is very supportive of reparations, but Conservatives are less enthusiastic. The minority leader of the NYC council and Republican from Staten Island, Joe Borelli, harshly condemned the report of Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan. Borelli drew attention to Vasan’s prior support for controversial policies including dispensing crack pipes through vending machines and firing unvaccinated public employees.

By having the most generous Medicaid program in the nation, Gerard Kassar, the chairman of the New York Conservative Party, noted that New York is already dealing with health inequities and added, “We’re not living in the past.” However, a reparations commission has already been created by the New York Legislature, and the governor, Kathy Hochul (D), is just waiting for her approval. Recent suggestions from a similar group in California would have cost the state’s taxpayers an eye-watering $100 billion. Now, white New Yorkers could be the next in line for a shakedown for reparations.
