“Unprecedented” Humiliation For Speaker McCarthy

Legislative proposals are firmly opposed by House Republicans in the Freedom Caucus, thus preventing them from coming up for a vote. Their objection is in response to Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s recent agreement to increase the debt ceiling with the Biden White House, which greatly polarized the party.

A GOP rule that would have put four bills dealing with gas stoves and regulatory reform up for a full vote on Tuesday was defeated by Democrats and twelve conservatives. As of right now, they have prevented any bills from being brought to the floor and have vowed to do so in the future.

After almost two decades of success, the House rule has now run into trouble, as the 220-206 vote is the first time it has failed to pass since 2002, according to the New York Post.

“Today, we took down the rule because we’re frustrated at the way this place is operating,” After the vote, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) spoke with reporters.

“We took a stand in January to end the era of the imperial speakership. We’re concerned that the fundamental commitments that allowed Kevin McCarthy to assume the speakership have been violated as a consequence of the debt limit deal,” he added.

According to The Post, a handful of politicians came together in support of Gaetz. They included Reps. Eli Crane (R-Ariz.), Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), Bob Good (R-Va.), Dan Bishop (R-N.C.), Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), Ken Buck (R-Colo.), Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), Matt Rosendale (R-Mont.), and Chip Roy (R-Texas) are all Republicans.

“We warned them not to cut that deal without coming down and sit down and talk to us. So this is all about restoring a process that will fundamentally change things back to what was working,” House Freedom Caucus member Roy stated on Tuesday.

Roy, a member of the Rules Committee, voted on Monday to move a significant matter to the top of the House’s agenda.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) took a calculated decision by abruptly voting “no” on a rule. His choice puts him in a position to maybe bring up the subject once more for a vote in the future.

The Post continued:

Legislation that has been stalled might restrict how the federal government regulates gas stoves, allow courts to settle all pertinent legal issues, and require congressional approval for significant agency actions.

Two days ahead of when it was anticipated that the government would run out of money to pay its obligations, Biden signed legislation on Saturday that raised the national debt ceiling by an additional $4 trillion.

The deal that increases the country’s borrowing ceiling and reduces expenditure to appease both parties has finally been approved by McCarthy and White House negotiators after weeks of difficult deliberations. The Capitol Hill high-stakes drama has come to an end.

Moving ahead, McCarthy’s position as Speaker may be in jeopardy.

Rep. Kin Buck told CNN’s Jim Sciutto last week, “I think he should be concerned” about a motion to leave the chair.

“I’m not suggesting the votes are there to remove the speaker, but the speaker promised that we would operate at 2022 appropriations levels when he got the support to be the speaker. He’s now changed that to 2023 levels plus one percent,” According to The Daily Caller, Buck added.

The American Conservative claims that “Some representatives have gone so far as to float the idea of using the vacate motion to try and remove McCarthy as speaker if this deal manages to go through. GOP sources told TAC that if someone were to move forward with a motion to vacate the chair, there would likely be enough votes to reignite the fight over Speaker of the House.”

Along with Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), Roy and Dan Bishop (R-N.C.) have proposed the notion of impeaching McCarthy as well. She charged McCarthy with “violating” his pledge to permit amendments in the House Rules Committee during an interview on the “War Room” podcast a week ago.
