Kurt Olsen, the attorney for Arizona Republican Kari Lake, presented convincing evidence in court on Wednesday to contest Katie Hobbs’ election as governor over Katie Hobbs, a Democrat. Over 334,000 mail-in ballots were left unverified, it was discovered, based on data examined by Maricopa County. These findings warrant careful scrutiny since they cast doubt on the validity of the election results.
Despite Hobbs winning the hotly contested statewide race with roughly 17,000 votes, Lake has expressed doubts about the validity of tens of thousands of votes.
“Maricopa’s own log data shows that over 264,000 ballots were reviewed [for vote signature matches] at a rate less than 3 seconds [and] 70,000 at a rate of less than 2 seconds,” Olsen said in a statement to Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Peter Thompson.
“In addition, testimony that Level 2 reviewers were so overwhelmed that they simply didn’t look at the signatures that were piling up on their desk. They simply kicked them back for the Level 1 reviewers to take another look at,” the lawyer said.
“That’s not signature review, your honor,” Olsen said.
There are two stages to the ballot review process in Maricopa County, more specifically in the Phoenix metro region. A ballot is sent to Level 2 reviewers for additional scrutiny if a Level 1 reviewer rejects it. The Level 2 reviewers next determine if the signatures correspond and count the ballot, or whether they determine that they do not and begin the “curing” procedure by getting in touch with the voter to authenticate their identity.
“That log data, your honor, shows that over 274,000 ballots were approved at less than three seconds each,” continued Olsen. This includes one signature validator who, in less than 3 seconds per signature, approved all 26,900 of the signatures he verified.
“Maricopa’s log file data shows that 11 of these signature verification workers approved 170,000 signatures at a rate of … between zero and 2.99 seconds with a 99.97 percent approval rating,” he said. “That’s not signature review, your honor. Simply flashing a signature on the screen, clicking a button and moving on is not signature review.”
Olsen added, “The evidence will show that Maricopa knew exactly what was going on. They could monitor each of their workers and in fact told them that they were being monitored.”

On Monday, Lake’s legal team released video showing two reviewers sitting next to one another while purportedly checking the signatures on mail-in votes.
The screening procedure shown on the right side of the video was done on purpose; the screener allowed enough time for the ballot images to load before thoroughly inspecting each one before moving on to the next.
In stark contrast to the situation on the right, the man quickly approved the arriving ballots on the left side of the film.
In a recent appearance with presenter Steve Bannon on Real America’s Voice, Lake claimed that the problem at hand goes beyond a few dubious signatures. Instead, he is ready to show how the signature verification process—which is the only way to guarantee the security of mail-in ballots—generally fails. This whole thing is a joke.
“Signature verification is one of the only methods to verify that a mail-in ballot would be authentic, and the process we have in Maricopa County is a complete sham. They’re not following the law at all,” she said.
Bannon was informed by Lake that her legal team had spoken with three informants “who were intimately involved in the signature verification process in Maricopa County.”
“They speak of how they were rejecting tens of thousands of signatures, up to the tune of maybe 130,000 ballots. And then somewhere above them in the chain of command, they were just being sent on through,” the Republican said.
She asserted that hundreds of thousands of incorrect ballots were inserted into the system as a result of a lax verification process.
“We’re confident that the number of fraudulent ballots exceeds the 17,000 margin separating myself and Katie Hobbs in their count of the election,” Lake said.
In the general election of 2022, VoteBeat Arizona reporter Jen Fifield found that 15,411 voters were able to “cure” their ballots by attesting that it was actually theirs, out of 18,510 signatures that election officials deemed to be “non-matching.” Sadly, 3,099 applications were nonetheless turned down because of incorrect or absent signatures. This comprised 1,299 missing signatures and 1,800 considered invalid signatures.
Whistleblower testimony during the trial on Wednesday showed that, in contrast to the primaries, there was less urgency when checking voters during the general election.
According to her, the county rejected the reviewers’ suggestion to correct ballots with erroneous signatures.
“We didn’t understand why we were leaving early when there was ballots left in the bins. And we had asked the manager, ‘Are you sure that you wanted us to go home? Would you like us to, you know, keep trying to call these voters to get these ballots cured?’ And they said no,” the informant gave testimony.
County Recorder Stephen Richer supported Maricopa’s signature review procedure in the 2022 election and ensured its accuracy. Additionally, he indicated that actions had been done to make improvements following the 2020 election.
According to her, the county “increased training for workers who review signatures, increased the number of signatures the workers had to compare, added an audit step for approved signatures, and increased the number of people doing the work, according to a Votebeat review of county documents and data.”
