Florida lawmakers have drawn attention by outlawing gender transition treatments for children, but they aren’t done there; they continue to push for more limitations.
People under 18 are no longer able to obtain hormone therapies, surgical treatments for gender dysphoria, or puberty blockers because to a limitation placed in place by Florida’s Board of Medicine. Those who were already reliant on such treatments prior to the verdict will still be able to do so, but sex reassignment surgeries are not allowed for them.
Even though President Biden publicly criticized the action as “close to sinful,” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis remained steadfast in his support of a planned law that would make delivering gender-affirming care to youngsters a crime and prohibit state funding for such treatments for adults.
“It’s just terrible what they’re doing,” Biden told “The Daily Show” earlier this week. “It’s not like, you know, a kid wakes up one morning and says, ‘You know, I decided I wanted to become a man,’ or ‘I want to become a woman’ … I mean, what are they thinking about here?”
“It’s cruel,” the President added.
Retaliating to the president, DeSantis tweeted: “It is not ‘sinful’ to prohibit the mutilation of minors. It is not acceptable for the federal government to mandate that procedures like sex change operations be allowed for kids.”
Florida’s Board of Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine recently declared a ban on hormone therapy and puberty blockers after reviewing hundreds of studies. The Board of Medicine member and pediatric anesthesiologist Dr. Hector Vila indicated that their decision was made because their team could not discover enough data to support such therapies.
“This board is not against research; it is not against care for transgender children,” Vila said.
The Florida Board of Medicine’s Scot Ackerman stated that some treatments have been prohibited to protect minors. Despite these restrictions, he highlighted the significance and necessity of ongoing care.

By implementing comparable laws, several other US states are following Florida’s lead. A new law prohibiting gender changes for children was passed in Kentucky with the support of a large majority of GOP lawmakers. The law also contains clauses that forbid schools from bringing up issues of sexual orientation or gender identity in front of pupils of any age and permit teachers to decline to use a student’s preferred pronouns. Supporters contend that these rules are intended to prevent young people from receiving gender-affirming medical care that they may come to regret as adults. GOP Senator Lindsey Tichenor stated, “We’re talking about removing healthy bodily parts that you cannot put back on. I have seen the images. It’s gruesome.
Tate Reeves, the governor of Mississippi, recently signed a bill into law that forbids minors from undergoing surgery for sexual reassignment or gender change, following in the footsteps of Republican governors in South Dakota and Utah. These choices make sure that young people get the care they need without being forced to change who they are.
The state of Florida will no longer allow minors to have gender reassignment surgery once Governor Ron DeSantis signs a bill into law. The goal of this new law is to safeguard children and guarantee that every choice made on their behalf reflects their best interests.
