In an interview with “60 Minutes” in April 2022, FBI Director Christopher Wray disclosed an utterly startling statistic: since 2021, killings against police enforcement have increased by 60%. This increase is unquestionably “an alarming percentage” for all members of our communities.
Three LAPD officers were shot during a struggle with an armed suspect on International Women’s Day, causing sorrow for the department. Nevertheless, Jonathan Magana, who had been defying the law in Lincoln Heights for many hours before, was not so fortunate, and his murder has since remained a mystery. Thankfully, all of them managed to escape the confrontation uninjured.

LAPD Assistant Chief Al Labrada said during a news conference that a suspect had been encountered. As police officers arrived on the scene, the suspect refused to cooperate and fired three rounds in self-defense, hitting their intended targets and injuring one officer in the arm, another in the knee, and a third fatally striking the officer around the chest.
A city-wide notice had been out, and police activity was brisk in Lincoln Heights. Only life-threatening calls were being answered when all available units were present on the spot. Juan Valdivia, a neighborhood resident, reported seeing “choppers” and law enforcement officers at the exchange location, as well as a frenzied energy in the air.
Mayor Karen Bass (D) of Los Angeles praised the courageous police officers who suffered injuries in a recent incident at an emotional news conference. She expressed sympathy for their families and hoped “forward to their recovery.” Happily, after being informed of the situation, each officer felt well enough to speak.
The offenses on Miguel Magana’s criminal record, which range from felony robbery to selling methamphetamine, offer a vivid picture of the suspect. The Los Angeles Times has not yet revealed if this person had a history of acting violently before the allegations against them.
