Donald Trump Just Announced the ‘Pro-American’ Trade Plan

With a “sweeping pro-American overhaul of our tax and trade policy,” the former president Donald J. Trump has suggested a bold plan to boost American manufacturing and lessen economic dependence on China. This bold strategy aims to revitalize the economy and elevate American leadership in both home manufacturing and global participation.

Trump first attacked President Joseph Biden in a campaign ad that was aired on Monday, saying that despite his claims to be pro-American manufacturing, he is “pushing the same pro-China globalist agenda that ripped the industrial heart out of our country.”

Trump articulated his goals “to move from the Biden system that punishes domestic producers and rewards outsourcers to a system that rewards domestic production and taxes foreign companies and those who export American jobs.”

“To achieve this goal, we will phase in a system of universal base-line tariffs on most foreign products. On top of this, higher tariffs will increase incrementally depending on how much individual foreign countries devalue their currency,” Trump said.

He noted that once the new tariff system is implemented, tariffs on American products would decline, allowing domestic firms to increase employment:

Tariffs on foreign manufacturers will eventually promote economic development by bringing more employment back to the United States. This policy could potentially reduce our trade deficit, resulting in millions of new American jobs being created. Moreover, we may anticipate billions of dollars from other countries into the US Treasury. These money can then be reinvested to support local companies, families, and communities throughout America.

With this audacious approach, I am prepared to build on my decades of experience dealing with NAFTA and introduce a cutting-edge strategic manufacturing project.

Trump then devoted all of his attention towards China and proposed a number of policy measures, including phasing out all major imports, to “completely eliminate dependence on China in all critical areas.”

He explained:

By removing China off the list of nations that get preferential trade treatment and implementing a 4-year plan to drastically cut down on imports of products manufactured in China, we will take firm action against them. This comprehensive strategy protects certain market sectors from being sidestepped by third party nations that would provide them with goods coming from the mainland, including electronics, steel, and medical. China

By enacting new regulations that bar American businesses from investing in China while forbidding Chinese corporations from buying properties in the country, the United States is taking steps to defend its economy and preserve American employment. Also, the federal government will no longer give contracts to businesses who outsource labor abroad, particularly to China.

According to the 45th President, Biden “will never get the job done” and that “[h]e is weak on China because the corrupt Biden family has received millions and millions of dollars from entities tied to the Chinese Communist Party.”

The trade imbalance surpassed $1 trillion last year after increasing 12.2 percent since 2021, according to a New York Times study published earlier this month. Moreover, the “U.S. trade deficit with China grew 8.3 percent annually to $382.9 billion, the second-highest total on record,” The New York Times’ well-known trade and international economics correspondent Ana Swanson is becoming more well-known in her industry.
