Erin Healy, a Democratic state representative from South Dakota, said in a tweet on Monday that idealizing the conventional two-parent, married family is “dangerous” and “un-American.”
Healy disputed the Family Heritage Alliance’s claim that having two married parents provides the ideal environment for kids, which sparked a flurry of defenses using evidence to back up their claims. No of one’s position on this hotly debated topic, it is impossible to discount the safety advantages of being in an intact household run by both biological parents.

“Extremist group Family Heritage Alliance said this morning that the safest place for kids are in families that have a married mom and dad. What a dangerous and un-American belief,” Rep. Healy refuses to comment on the congresswoman’s general statements, and neither her office nor the Family Heritage Alliance do so in front of the public.
According to research from the Department of Health and Human Services, having two supportive parents greatly lowers the likelihood of abuse. In reality, the rates of abuse and neglect are far lower for children of married biological parents than they are for children of single parents, where these rates are 10 times higher than in conventional households.
The research indicated that compared to other families, children from single-parent homes with live-in partners were more likely to suffer physical and sexual abuse. In stark contrast to the rates among families with married biological parents, who were 2.5 for physical violence per 1000 people and 0.7 for sexual assault per 1000 people, respectively, 15.4 out of 1,000 suffered physical abuse and 12.1 out of 1,000 encountered sexual abuse.
“Actually, when it comes to abuse, the safest place for kids is an intact, biological married family. See, e.g., this federal report on child abuse and neglect,” The well-known National Marriage Project director, Brad Wilcox, has shared marital advice to help partnerships become better.
