According to reports from the Department of Justice (DOJ), a former member of the United States Army Reserve has been found guilty of acting as an unauthorized agent for the Chinese government and has been sentenced to eight years in prison by a federal court on Wednesday.
Ji Chaoqun was reportedly tasked by Xu Yanjun, an official with China’s Ministry of State Security, with collecting intelligence on engineers and scientists residing in the United States for the aim of attempting to acquire access to advanced American aerospace technology. In 2016, when Ji joined the Army Reserves, he lied about having a foreign contact. Later, Ji disclosed that he had aspirations of earning lucrative employment at either NASA or one of America’s premier spy organizations after he gained citizenship and clearance.

Ji was found guilty in a federal court in the United States of operating as an agent for foreign governments without providing prior notice and conspiring on actions of this kind in the month of October 2022. This event marked Ji’s conviction. Additionally, he faced charges regarding false representation made towards the Department of Justice and the United States Army while his journey began in 2013 when he enrolled at the Illinois Institute of Technology studying engineering fields. During this time, he was also confronted with allegations concerning the theft of government property.
The United States of America promptly sentenced Xu to twenty years in jail for committing financial crimes against Chinese nationals in a historic case that set an international precedent. The trial took place one month after Xu was extradited to the United States.
After being asked for more comment by the Daily Caller News Foundation, the Department of Justice refused to offer any other information.
