With Governor Gavin Newsom’s signing of AB 37 into law, making mail-in voting a permanent component for all elections in the state, California has embraced the future of election participation. Californians welcomed the increase in mail-in voting in 2020 with excitement and enthusiasm; now they have another another method to remain connected and involved at critical moments on important topics that influence their lives every day.
A “voter integrity” law, AB 37 permits the state to mail a ballot to each registered voter who is currently in good standing. According to a press release from Newsom’s office, the measure “increase access to democracy and enfranchise more voters.”

“As states across our country continue to enact undemocratic voter suppression laws,” the governor said, “California is increasing voter access, expanding voting options and bolstering elections integrity and transparency.”
According to Public Interest Legal Foundation, a conservative group with offices in Indiana, the trial with vote-by-mail had a startling fall in effectiveness in 2022. This is a sign of larger problems with our electoral process that cannot be disregarded anymore.
The audit revealed a depressing statistic: almost 226,000 mail-in votes were rejected by state election authorities during the primary and general elections, despite efforts to expand voter participation.
Every vote counts since many state elections have very narrow margins. As a result, voter representation and its impact on municipal elections are given greater attention.
In the general election, more than 87 percent of votes were declared invalid by PILF for a variety of reasons, including lateness, mismatched signatures, a lack of identification or signatures, or even being recorded as having already cast a ballot. Out of these cases, only 0.6% occurred because a voter was wrongly registered; while 0.5% had no ballot found within their envelope when opened!
Over a stunning 10 million votes remain unaccounted for despite the distribution of a record number of ballots, setting off alarms and raising major concerns about the accuracy of voting systems throughout America.
During the most recent general election, the state mailed out a total of 22.1 million votes, of which 9.8 million were accepted and 1.4 million were cast in person at voting places; however, 10.9 of those ballots were unaccounted for, according to PILF’s ballot data.
In the PILF study, J. Christian Adams, the organization’s president, was quoted as saying: “Mail ballots disenfranchise. There are many reasons mail ballots fail ultimately to count. No one casting a ballot at home can correct an error before it’s too late. California’s vote-by-mail demonstration should serve as a warning to state legislators elsewhere.”
Adams’ comment was uncomplicated.
Many people are now concerned about mail-in voting. The 2005 Commission on Federal Election Reform, co-chaired by President Jimmy Carter and Secretary of State James A. Baker III, emphasized this issue by pointing to evidence of increased voter fraud, proving that maintaining election integrity is still as important as ever. “Absentee ballots remain the largest source of potential voter fraud.”
The COVID-19 pandemic provided Democrats with an opportunity to advance their long held lobbying for universal absentee voting, implemented through the use of mail-in ballots and early/ballot harvesting. Although contentious, it seems that these recently established policies will remain in place.
If Republicans want to win more elections in the future, they must move soon as Democrats are gaining ground.
Due to the long-standing Republican practice of casting ballots in person, Democrats have had plenty of opportunity to turn out the vote and gain a sizable edge over their GOP rivals, giving Republicans a clear disadvantage going into Election Day.
In Arizona on Election Day, many constituents encountered long lines and technical issues at polling centers – leading to a loss of time and potentially impacting their decision to exercise the right to vote. How much did these obstacles hinder participation? As we consider this historic day, the resolution is still up for dispute.
Voters have learned new methods to participate in democracy, so the conventional Election Day that many people have grown up with is no longer the norm. A tribute to our country’s devotion to representation and justice, it’s an exciting time when individuals may have their say even if they aren’t physically there.
To guarantee Democrats can grab winning chances and achieve success in future elections, we must use proven tactics like vote-by-mail.

States should only send out ballots by mail to those who request them. Voters need to return ballots with their signatures on the returning envelopes so their signatures can be compared to those on record at the election commission office. They must be returned prior to the close of election on election day. If they arrive late they should not be counted.
Mail in voting needs to be s
topped. That is a sure fire way to rig elections.
