President Joe Biden turned down Governor Kristi Noem’s request to conduct an Independence Day fireworks show at one of America’s most beautiful monuments after a protracted disagreement. The two have been at odds for more than two years as they continue to argue about the appropriate way to observe the nation’s independence day celebration.
Kristi Noem, the governor of South Dakota, was dismayed to learn that the Biden administration had rejected her request for a fireworks display on January 12th to honor Mount Rushmore’s beauty and history.

Due to complaints made by many Native American tribes in South Dakota, Mount Rushmore National Memorial Superintendent Michelle Wheatley expressed her worries about organizing a fireworks show to the state’s Department of Tourism. These objecting organizations listed possible fire hazards and disruptions to regular visitation hours as concerns presented by such an event, in addition to citing a “adverse effect” on their “traditional cultural landscape.”
After NPS denied Noem’s proposal to conduct a big Fourth of July show at Mt. Rushmore in 2022, she filed a lawsuit against the federal government, which she said was unjustly impeding her request. The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals did not approve of her conduct, however, and rejected Noem’s complaint on the grounds that government authorities had the authority to do so.
The lifting of an 11-year ban on fireworks displays occurred in South Dakota during the last year of former President Donald Trump’s administration. This change was made despite risk of wildfire, with reports from ABC News indicating that when asked why it had been banned under Obama’s administration, then-President Trump said he “didn’t know,” but could lift the ban regardless. The former president spoke at this significant occasion and joined in the celebration of Independence Day.
