After serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan, Ryan O’Leary, a Carroll High School alum and National Guard veteran, is currently on the front lines in Ukraine. Ryan has spent years serving America’s national obligations, but he’s now fighting for a new cause under foreign command against strange foes, and something about it still bothers him.
O’Leary paints a gloomy picture for the future of dispute resolution as he battles against corruption and criminal conduct in his chain of command. Due to equipment going missing and maybe being auctioned off on the black market, his unit is grossly underprepared. Major General Baroda makes news at the highest levels with a long-running story involving drug trafficking and other illicit activities that have seriously impeded progress toward the peacekeeping objectives set forward by international organizations.

Young Mr. O’Leary may have wanted to further the cause of justice, but despite his heroic efforts, men like Captain Baroda will cruelly retaliate against him. The U.S. should take notice because President Zelensky and General Zalushny are sending their brave youth into battle without the necessary supplies or security, which will surely result in their deaths at the hands of Russian forces rather than freedom in a developing democracy.
Unfortunately, Ryan O’Leary’s extensive tour through the Great Plains has brought home a sobering truth. We wish him strength as he travels this challenging path ahead and hope that his example of tenacity and fortitude will serve as an inspiration to all of us.
