Cunningham, who was just 19 years old, took the incredible and gutsy choice to serve his nation. He enlisted in the Navy in 1951 and later completed 54 sorties over Korea as a night pilot, an outstanding performance that saw him promoted through the Marine ranks until he retired as a Colonel. Cunningham put a lot of effort into his studies during this period, receiving his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in physics before finishing.

A seasoned astronaut was chosen by NASA to be a member of its third rookie class in 1963. This decision was the first step on his incredible journey throughout space – he served as backup lunar module pilot for Apollo 1 and prime crew member for Apollo 2 before it got canceled; then during the groundbreaking 11 day-long mission that opened the door to an eventual trip to moon in 1969, Cunningham stood out by acting as Lunar Module Pilot.

The Cunningham family released a message, which NASA published. They spoke out “immense pride” A colonel’s life, claiming they had a “deep gratitude” knowledge as a “patriot, an explorer, pilot, astronaut, husband, brother, and father.”
