Only a few months ago, it would have looked like nothing more than a crazy conspiracy theory that a major social media platform was in reality collaborating with federal law enforcement to restrict material about the family member of one of the two candidates for an impending presidential election.
But it is true. everything of it.
Twitter has thoroughly disclosed its approach to censoring under previous regimes under the direction of eccentric billionaire Internet CEO Elon Musk, notably in respect to news involving Hunter Biden and COVID-19. This is a big step toward more openness for one of the most popular social networking sites in use today.

“Elon Musk’s Twitter Files Are a Feast for Conspiracy Theorists,” An article in Wired immediately after the “Twitter files” initially began to fall.
Twitter has undoubtedly found itself in a few absurd situations. This digital firm is presently fighting an uphill struggle for credibility and openness, from utilizing its own internal records to demonstrate that some conspiracy theories are true to creating negative public relations problems.
The FBI has lately been under fire for its apparent role in Twitter’s decision to block news about Hunter Biden’s laptop despite the absence of supporting proof. New information about the agency, however, has emerged and paints an intriguing picture. Between October 2019 and February 2021, on their own, they made payments totaling $3.5 million at the discretion of Jim Baker, the former general counsel during Operation Crossfire Hurricane, as recompense for the extensive demands they had satiated from platforms like Twitter.
In response to these discoveries, the FBI has expressed concern that the information may “discredit” the agency. The agency asserts that the reports are essentially worthless in and of themselves.
“The correspondence between the FBI and Twitter show nothing more than examples of our traditional, longstanding and ongoing federal government and private sector engagements, which involve numerous companies over multiple sectors and industries,” In a news release, they wrote.
To control potentially divisive information, the FBI worked closely with Twitter’s censorship panels. In order to quickly react when a story was reported for censorship, including the most recent Hunter Biden laptop issue, the former Head of Trust and Safety, Yoel Roth, attended frequent meetings with government organizations including the DHS and DNI. Mr. Roth asked if “anything valuable” could be provided about what had transpired throughout this process amongst all concerned parties after significant work by both sides resulted in the effective mitigation of any possible difficulties posed by the dubious article.
There were further internal documents revealed in the Twitter files “no impediments to information sharing” between Twitter and the FBI. the FBI just recently informed Twitter about our accounts on November 10, 2022 “potentially constitute violations of Twitter’s Terms of Service.” What was formerly thought to be the purview of private companies has now been invaded by the authority of the federal government. This is an extraordinary change in what many believed to be inalienable online free speech rights by affecting how Twitter moderates and restricts the material of specific persons.
Even Twitter’s most ardent supporter of censorship had to take a backseat when it came to the connection between the FBI and the social media site.
“I’m not particularly comfortable with the Bureau (and by extension the IC) demanding written answers,” Roth emailed the Twitter staff.
Americans want solutions. According to a December Harvard CAPS-Harris survey, the great majority of Americans favor criminal punishment for Twitter workers who collaborated with federal law enforcement authorities to restrict tweets, in clear violation of the first amendment. Americans could just receive those answers now that Republicans are ready to win control of the House. Numerous GOP lawmakers have expressed a desire to look into the situation. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who has a good chance of becoming House Speaker, has demanded a “church style investigation” into how the FBI collaborated with Twitter to restrict content. James Comer, the new chair of the House Oversight Committee, described the FBI and Twitter’s conduct as “a violation of the Constitution.”
After just a few short weeks, it became clear that the allegations of cooperation between the government and social media corporations were not just fanciful conspiracy ideas, but were unassailable facts. The public’s trust in the FBI has been destroyed as a result because Americans will not stand for being lied to without consequence.
