The latest “Twitter Files,” published on Tuesday by Lee Fang, revealed how social media giant Twitter had been helping American intelligence agencies carry out covert online operations. This unexpected revelation raises concerns about potential privacy violations and the improper use of digital technology for surveillance.
Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, retweeted a long discussion in which Fang said : “despite promises to shut down covert state-run propaganda networks, Twitter docs show that the social media giant directly assisted the U.S. military’s influence operations.”
“Twitter has claimed for years that they make concerted efforts to detect & thwart gov-backed platform manipulation. Here is Twitter testifying to Congress about its pledge to rapidly identify and shut down all state-backed covert information operations & deceptive propaganda,” The conversation went on.
The workings of psychological influence operations were revealed by U.S. Central Command, who also revealed that Twitter protected and approved these operations against many Middle Eastern countries for a considerable amount of time, with some accounts being live until now.
