Nevada Republicans have suffered a significant political setback after Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford defeated Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo in the state’s closely contested gubernatorial election. The Associated Press called the race for Ford, ending Lombardo’s bid for a second term and delivering Democrats one of their most important gubernatorial victories.
The outcome represents a major shift in Nevada’s political landscape, particularly after Lombardo’s successful 2022 campaign made him one of the Republicans capable of winning statewide in a traditionally competitive battleground. This time, however, economic concerns and an aggressive Democratic campaign proved difficult obstacles for the incumbent.
Ford’s victory also gives Democrats an opportunity to advance legislation that Lombardo repeatedly opposed during his first term. Several proposals that stalled under the Republican governor could soon return to the legislative agenda, potentially reshaping Nevada’s housing market, healthcare policies, and business environment.
