Former FBI Director James Comey is facing another federal prosecution, reigniting his long-running conflict with President Donald Trump and putting his handling of sensitive government information under renewed scrutiny.
The Justice Department’s latest case centers on allegations that Comey improperly disclosed national defense information to the media in 2016. The new allegations represent the third federal criminal case brought against the former FBI chief since 2025, although one of the earlier cases was dismissed by a federal judge.
Comey wasted little time responding publicly. In a video posted online, he declared, “they’re back again,” before insisting, “I’m still innocent.”
The former FBI director has rejected the accusations against him, while his attorneys are challenging the latest case in court. The dispute now raises fresh questions about the handling of sensitive government information, the limits of federal prosecutorial authority, and the increasingly bitter confrontation between Comey and the Trump administration.
