A senior California law enforcement official was caught using a restricted government database to investigate coworkers, family members, public officials, and even vehicles advertised for sale.
Yet despite the troubling findings, the public still does not know who the officer is, which agency employed him, or whether he remains in a position of authority.
A report released October 1 by California State Auditor Grant Parks revealed that the unidentified officer repeatedly accessed the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) for reasons unrelated to legitimate police work.
