A nearly two-decade-old controversy involving Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico is drawing renewed attention after a former political ally publicly accused him of abandoning a bipartisan student campaign for personal advancement.
Mike Garcia, a former president of the University of Texas College Republicans who later served as general counsel for the Texas House Freedom Caucus, detailed his allegations in a lengthy post on X.
Garcia claims that Talarico, who once led the university’s Democratic student organization, withdrew support from a joint effort to reduce college tuition in 2009. He alleges that the decision was motivated by Talarico’s desire to maintain favorable relationships with university officials.
