Former special counsel Jack Smith acknowledged that his investigation into President Donald Trump obtained financial records connected to thousands of political donors, following a tense exchange with Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley.
Newly released records highlighted by Grassley indicate that investigators obtained at least 4,782 checks associated with donors in all 50 states. Some of those individuals reportedly contributed as little as $1 to Trump and affiliated political organizations.
The disclosures have brought renewed scrutiny to the reach of the federal investigation, particularly the collection of financial information belonging to Americans whose apparent connection to the probe was their political contributions.
