Three prominent White House reporters gathered in Austin over the weekend to game out what the Republican Party could look like after President Donald Trump — and some of the names they floated immediately got the audience’s attention.
But hanging over the entire discussion was a development from inside Trump’s own White House: the president has privately spoken favorably about Vice President JD Vance as a potential successor.
Politico White House bureau chief Dasha Burns, NBC News chief White House correspondent Garrett Haake and New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman appeared Friday at the Texas Tribune Festival, where Washington Post journalist Annah Aschbrenner asked them about the emerging 2028 Republican field.
