A Pentagon review into the disastrous 2021 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan has uncovered what officials describe as highly relevant classified records that had allegedly been kept out of sight.
Sean Parnell, a War Department spokesperson who is leading the Afghanistan Withdrawal Special Review Panel, revealed the discovery in a video message marking the fifth anniversary of the deadly Abbey Gate attack in Kabul.
The timing of the announcement put renewed attention on one of the most painful episodes of the U.S. withdrawal. On August 26, 2021, an ISIS-K suicide bomber attacked crowds gathered outside Hamid Karzai International Airport. Thirteen American service members were killed, along with approximately 170 Afghan civilians.
