A routine trip to the hospital turned into a medical nightmare for four patients in Nashville after an apparent pharmacy mistake resulted in them receiving a potentially deadly potassium medication instead of an anesthetic.
The alarming incident unfolded at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown on Friday, Aug. 14, where four patients undergoing joint replacement procedures were reportedly administered potassium phosphate rather than mepivacaine, the anesthetic they were supposed to receive.
The consequences were devastating.
