Democrats frequently present themselves as the defenders of democratic institutions. But as the party begins preparing for the 2028 presidential race, its latest move is already generating questions about whether party insiders are once again shaping the nomination process long before voters get their say.
The Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws Committee has recommended that South Carolina open the party’s 2028 presidential primary calendar, repeating a major feature of the schedule used in 2024.
The committee voted 26-19 to put South Carolina first, ahead of Nevada and New Hampshire. The recommendation still needs approval from the full Democratic National Committee at its August meeting.
