A cargo vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile Tuesday morning while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, raising fresh concerns about the safety of commercial shipping as the United States and Iran remain locked in a tense military confrontation.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. local time near Oman, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center, which monitors maritime security incidents in the region. The vessel reported being “hit by an unknown projectile” while traveling approximately 23 miles northeast of Al Khasab.
Authorities have not publicly identified the ship or disclosed its flag, ownership or cargo.
