California Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing a political problem that cannot be blamed on Republicans.
His own party is moving against him.
The latest blow came as California Democrats backed a controversial proposal that Newsom has repeatedly opposed: a one-time 5 percent tax on the wealth of the state’s billionaires.
The California Democratic Party ultimately endorsed Proposition 40, setting the stage for an intense November battle over whether roughly 200 of the state’s wealthiest residents should surrender 5 percent of their net worth to Sacramento. The measure is projected by supporters to generate approximately $100 billion, with most of the money intended for healthcare programs.
