Rep. Ilhan Omar is facing renewed attention after a State Department report identified her daughter, Isra Hirsi, as a participant in a controversial trip to Cuba that is now drawing questions from lawmakers investigating organizations accused of promoting messaging aligned with the Chinese Communist Party.
The report, titled “Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism,” highlights the March visit by the Nuestra América Convoy, a delegation that traveled to Havana while delivering aid and meeting with Cuban officials and activists. Among those named in the report was Hirsi, alongside several progressive activists and online personalities, including Twitch streamer Hasan Piker.
According to the State Department, the trip has become part of a broader discussion over foreign influence campaigns and organizations that critics argue promote authoritarian governments while downplaying human rights concerns.
