The financial controversy surrounding the Obama Presidential Center continues to deepen as another subcontractor says the high-profile project has left his company financially devastated, forcing a shutdown, employee layoffs, and an escalating legal fight over millions of dollars in disputed payments.
What was promoted as a landmark development designed to create jobs and provide opportunities for small and minority-owned businesses is now facing renewed scrutiny after another contractor alleged the project became a financial disaster. According to the subcontractor, mounting losses, delayed payments, and costly project changes ultimately pushed his company to the edge.
Mike Owen, owner of Chicago-based Adamson Plumbing Contractors, said the financial strain became so severe that his business was forced to halt operations after decades of work. The company, which participated in the Obama Presidential Center project under the name Marsh-Adamson, has now laid off 25 union employees while pursuing legal action to recover what it believes it is owed.
