For the first time in weeks, former Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell is speaking publicly about the health scare that has kept him away from Washington — but his latest update is raising nearly as many questions as it answers.
The 84-year-old Kentucky senator, who announced earlier this year that he will retire when his term ends, released a written statement on Sunday along with a photo showing him seated in what appears to be a rehabilitation facility beside his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.
The image was intended to reassure supporters after weeks of speculation about McConnell’s condition. Instead, it has fueled a fresh round of discussion among political observers who continue to wonder why so little information has been released about one of the most powerful Republicans in modern Senate history.
