Democrats’ New “Red Guard” Raises Alarms

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is facing growing scrutiny after details emerged about a nationwide initiative known as the “Red Rabbits,” a project that critics say resembles the early stages of an organized political security force operating under the banner of community defense.

While supporters insist the program is focused on safety and protest organization, opponents argue the effort represents something far more significant: the creation of a structured activist network trained to operate in increasingly confrontational political environments.

The controversy comes as the DSA continues to expand its influence within progressive politics. Once viewed as a fringe movement, the organization has successfully placed members and allies into elected offices across the country. Now, critics are questioning whether the group’s ambitions extend beyond electoral politics and into direct-action activism on a national scale.

According to reports, the Red Rabbits initiative was formally approved during the DSA’s 2025 national convention. Organizers reportedly debated multiple names before settling on “Red Rabbits,” a title inspired by the novel Watership Down. Other proposed names reportedly included “National Vigilance Committee,” though some members worried such terminology might be viewed as endorsing vigilantism.

The organization describes its mission in relatively straightforward terms. According to supporters, the Red Rabbits focus on training members in five primary areas: de-escalation techniques, Stop the Bleed medical training, firearm safety, unarmed self-defense, and protest marshalling.
