A fragile ceasefire in Lebanon is reportedly moving forward after a deadly escalation between Israel and Hezbollah threatened to ignite a wider regional conflict and derailed diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.
The latest round of tensions erupted after a Hezbollah roadside bomb attack killed four Israeli soldiers and injured several others, prompting a major military response from Israel and casting serious doubt on already delicate negotiations involving Iran and the United States.
According to reports, the United States and Qatar worked behind the scenes to secure a ceasefire arrangement that was expected to take effect Friday. The agreement comes amid growing concerns that continued violence along Israel’s northern border could trigger a much larger confrontation involving multiple regional powers.
While the ceasefire may temporarily calm the fighting in Lebanon, another diplomatic casualty quickly emerged.
