A fugitive wanted for murder in Mexico has finally been captured after authorities say he nearly killed a Tennessee woman in a brutal knife attack and spent more than a year hiding from law enforcement.
The arrest has reignited debate over border security and the ability of foreign fugitives to enter and remain inside the United States undetected.
According to investigators, Alejandro Mancera Canchola was already wanted by Mexican authorities for the alleged murder of his first wife before establishing a new life in Tennessee.
Now he faces attempted murder charges after prosecutors say he launched a horrific attack against another woman who narrowly survived.
A Violent Attack That Nearly Ended in Murder
Authorities say the attack occurred on December 17, 2024, at a residence in LaFollette, Tennessee.
Prosecutors allege Canchola arrived at the home carrying a knife and attacked the mother of his child.
Investigators say the assault was so violent that the victim suffered a devastating neck wound stretching from one side of her throat to the other.
