President Donald Trump delivered a blistering attack against former President Barack Obama on Wednesday while meeting with the President of Egypt on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France. During remarks to reporters, Trump revisited the Obama administration’s handling of the Iran nuclear agreement, accusing his predecessor of projecting weakness and arguing that his administration negotiated from a position of strength.
Trump pointed to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and criticized the Obama administration’s decision to transfer billions of dollars connected to a longstanding financial settlement with Iran. Recounting the payment, Trump told reporters:
“Nobody could have made this deal. I mean, the JCPOA, done by Obama, he handed them $1.7 billion in cash… green cash from banks into a Boeing 757 and flew it into Iran, and they stood at the plane!”
The president continued by claiming the payment amounted to an attempt to gain favor with the Iranian regime rather than secure a lasting agreement.
