Senate Republicans thought they finally had the green light to unleash the largest border security and deportation funding package in years.
Then one unelected Washington insider slammed the brakes.
Just as Republicans were preparing to fast-track billions for ICE, Border Patrol, and President Donald Trump’s mass deportation agenda through reconciliation, Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough stepped in and gutted major sections of the package, handing Democrats a procedural victory they could never have won at the ballot box.
The ruling instantly sent shockwaves through Capitol Hill because it threatens to delay or weaken one of the GOP’s biggest promises to voters: restoring immigration enforcement after years of open-border chaos under Joe Biden.
MacDonough ruled that several major Homeland Security funding provisions violated the Senate’s Byrd Rule, the procedural standard that governs what can be included in a reconciliation bill.
That ruling puts Republicans in a dangerous position.
